Exploritas at International House at the University of California, Berkeley

2010 Program

International House will host one week-long program from June 6 to 12, 2010.  This year will mark the 20th year that International House has hosted an Exploritas/Elderhostel program.  Participating in Exploritas is a great way to visit Berkeley while enjoying classes with others who share your interests. Single rooms are available at NO ADDITIONAL COST.  Participants stay in renovated rooms with one or two twin beds. Restrooms are “down the hall.” Cafeteria meals offer choices to please any palate. Stay additional days for $65 per night per person (this includes meals) to explore the San Francisco area with access to BART and buses. Limited parking located approximately three blocks away is available for $90 per week.

The Berkeley Forum on the Middle East:
Can the Obama Administration Forge Lasting Peace?

June 6 - 12, 2010
Program # 18888
Program fee: $753

Join University of California professors and Middle East scholars to explore key issues and options for US foreign policy in the Middle East.  Consider the complex issues behind the headlines including the role of the U.S., the impact of troop withdrawal in Iraq, religion and politics in Iran and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.  Discuss powerful cultural and social trends, such as Islam and democracy.

A coach excursion to the spectacular new California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco is included in the program fee.  We will also enjoy afternoon tours of UC museums and libraries and discussions with congenial participants in our café.  For music lovers, The Berkeley Festival will be on campus during the same week, offering dozens of early music concerts. You will also have the opportunity to view relevant films and interact with international students over meals.   Our program is co-sponsored by the California Alumni Association and UC's Center for Middle Eastern whose Vice Chair Emeritus, Dr. Laurence Michalak, will serve as our primary speaker.

Primary Speaker

Dr. Laurence Michalak, a cultural anthropologist with extensive experience in the Middle East and North Africa, will be our primary speaker, joining other scholars to present a diverse and balanced academic program. He will address current issues, the role of religion, and techniques of conflict resolution. Dr. Michalak, Vice Chair emeritus of UC Berkeley's Center for Middle Eastern Studies, has written extensively on the Muslim world and has researched Muslims in France and in the U.S. In addition to his 23-year career at UC Berkeley, he is a frequent speaker on the Middle East including numerous UC Berkeley alumni and Smithsonian trips. Dr. Michalak received his BA from Stanford, his masters from the University of London, and his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley. His honors include the Abdul Ghaffar Khan Peace With Justice Award for promoting American understanding of Islam and the Middle East Outreach Council Lifetime Achievement Award for public education about the Middle East.

Accessibility

We will walk 4 to 6 blocks on our hilly campus on field trips to campus museums and libraries and stand during tours. International House is a large building and the distances within the building are difficult for some. There is an elevator from the ground floor to your room. Participants with mobility concerns should contact the coordinator. The bus for the included San Francisco excursion to The California Academy of Sciences is not wheelchair accessible.
