“Since my first I-House days,” says David Lowenthal, “faith in the future has dwindled in the face of failed promises to banish famine, pestilence, and ethnic and religious slaughter, and of ominous portents of utter catastrophe.  Surveys show pessimism and reluctance to face the future to be widespread among old and young alike.” Lowenthal sketches the causes of this decline and suggests how it might be overcome, “heartened by the global commitments and unquenchable enthusiasm of the I-House community I’ve been privileged to know for sixty years.”

David Lowenthal, emeritus professor of geography and honorary research fellow at University College London, is a gold medalist of the Royal Geographical and the American Geographical societies and Senior Fellow of the British Academy.  He has taught at a score of universities on both sides of the Atlantic.  Among his numerous books are: The Past Is a Foreign Country (1985), The Politics of the Past (1989), The Nature of Cultural Heritage and the Culture of Natural Heritage (2005), Islands on Our Minds (in press) and Undiscovered Country: Reclaiming the Future (forthcoming).
