Programs, 2003
Are you interested
in exploring the role religion plays in international issues or learning
more about Mark Twain? For adults who are 55 and older, participating
in an Elderhostel program is a great way to return to Berkeley while enjoying
excellent classes taught by university professors. Rooms, meals, and lectures
are in International House.

The
Interplay of Religion and Politics Around the World
June 1-7, 2003
Religion plays a powerful role in many international issues. Explore the
relationship between religion, politics, and conflict and gain insight
into the perspectives that influence today's headlines. Prof. David Biale
is back by popular demand with other noted experts to offer a comparative
overview of the relationships between religions (Eastern and Western)
and political realities, past and present. One day will be devoted to
a deluxe coach trip to Napa for wine tasting, beautiful scenery, and independent
lunch on Sonoma Square, home of a historic mission. The Napa trip, Berkeley
museums, and a docent-led tour of the UC Botanical Garden are included.
$585 for room board, classes, and activities.
Mark
Twain: His Life and Times
June 8-14
The class is co-sponsored by the University's Mark Twain Project, which
is home to the world's largest collection of Twain manuscripts, letters,
and photos. Lectures will include Mark Twain in the West and his experiences
as a businessman, family man, his correspondence, and the editing of his
books. A history professor will discuss the post-gold Rush era that Twain
experienced. One day will be devoted to a deluxe coach trip to Napa for
wine tasting, beautiful scenery, and independent lunch on Sonoma Square,
home of a historic mission. The Napa trip and docent-led tours of Oakland
Museum's California history exhibit and the UC Botanical Garden are included.
$585 for room board, classes, and activities.
