Michael N. Chetkovich, a dear friend of International House and Board member from 1979-1989, died April 21 at the age of 81. A native of Angels Camp, California, he received a bachelor's degree from the College of Commerce (now the Haas School of Business) in 1939 and a master's in 1940.

After his retirement in 1978 from Deloitte & Touche, Chetkovich was appointed Regents' Professor at the business school and served there as director of external affairs. He chaired the board of the UC Berkeley Foundation and was the chief financial officer of International House.

Chetkovich received Berkeley's Alumnus of the Year in 1985 and the Chancellor's Award in 1986 for his dedicated efforts on behalf of the university.

Milton G. Leong (above) was born in 1914 in Oakland, California, where his father was a dentist. He was taken to China as an infant and spent some 29 years there. Leong was schooled in American and English grammar schools before graduating from Tientein University in civil engineering in 1938. He was a structural engineer with the Kailan Mining Administration and served with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers making reconnaissance missions in the China-Burma-India Theater from 1942 to 1948.

In 1947 Leong returned to the U.S. and received his master's degree in civil engineering at U.C. He worked with the Department of Public Works and the Division of Architecture before becoming president of Leong-Razzano Associates, Inc., consulting, civil, and structural engineers in Berkeley. Leong was a devoted alumnus of I-House and Board member from 1974-'88. He promoted the ideals of the House as he traveled the globe with the many friends he met here 50 years ago. Many alumni fondly recall his work as engineer on the I-House lodge at Tahoe.

Leong is survived by his wife, Wen-Yen and three children: Kay Herdeg (IH '70-'71) of New York City, Kenneth of New Hampshire, and John of Boston. A memorial evening celebrating the life of Milton Leong will be held at International House on March 27, 1999.

Laurel Joy Rubin, I-House 1991-'94, died May 6 in a tragic car accident. Her friends remember her warmth and great enthusiasm for exploring the world.

Raymond Gan recalls, "While others dreamt, she lived out strong convictions and ideals. In fact, she was killed while driving to meet with farm workers whom she helped for free."

Born in Wappingers Falls, New York, Rubin graduated from Yale in 1989 and in earned her law degree from Boalt Hall in1994. She worked in Richland, Washington, for the Northwest Justice Project, a non-profit organization that provides free legal services to low income persons in Washington.
