Joyce Robbins Meldrum August, 1999 Joyce’s recollections of a full life include, “Overseas beckoned so I applied to go to U.C. I was also accepted as a resident in International House and so began one of the most rewarding and exciting periods of my life.” Travel and “happy married life” with Ron Meldrum in Australia followed. Joyce was involved in numerous committees and helped organize the Melbourne International House. Frances B. Jenkins November, 1999 Francis X. Kast November, 1999 Albert J. Lokken January, 2000 A chemistry professor at Brunswick College, GA. Frederick M. Wong October, 1999 1960’s Alumni Rose E. Bird December, 1999 Chief Justice, California Supreme Court 1977-’86, and the first woman to serve on the Court. She is remembered as a courageous and compassionate judge, adamantly opposed to the death penalty. Bird was appointed by Governor Jerry Brown whom she met at I-House. Brown said that Bird “was very loyal to her friends and very principled — she was always ready to do battle.” Her unwillingness to yield on liberal ideals led to removal from the Court by voters.
