Pilgrimage to the Blue Mosque in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan. This is one of Douglas Powell's remarkable Images of Afghanistan, taken between 1976 and 1978 while traveling to remote locations to establish a snow survey program. |
International House alumnus, Douglas Powell (IH 1947-50), presented an introduction to the geography and cultures of Afghanistan in a fascinating slide show on March 14. His photos have become even more significant because many historical sites and villages have been destroyed.
Powell, a geography professor at UC Berkeley, San Francisco State, and Sonoma State, also gave this program for a popular UC Berkeley class, Afghanistan and Its Neighbors, which was developed in response to growing interest in the region in the aftermath of September 11. His photos can be viewed online at:

Powell will present this program again for the June 9-15 Elderhostel Program. |
