Congressman Hamilton, Guest of Honor and Keynote Speaker.

International House honored Lee H. Hamilton as guest of honor and keynote speaker at the fifteenth annual Celebration and Awards Gala on May 7. As a United States Congressman for thirty-four years, Mr. Hamilton established himself as a leading congressional voice on foreign affairs. During his tenure, he served as Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Committee on International Relations and chaired the Subcommittee on Europe and the Middle East. He made significant contributions to promoting democracy and market reform in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe as well as promoting peace and stability in the Middle East. Mr. Hamilton, who is Director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and Vice-Chairman of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, was honored for his exceptional contributions to international understanding.

Glenn Isaacson was honored as Board Member of the Year at the spring gala. He is an internationally recognized real estate development management expert who has served on the International House Board of Directors continuously since 1988 except for a one-year break. As Chair of the I-House Executive and House Committees, Glenn has played a leadership role in shaping the ten-year building renovation program. His distinguished career includes 40 years of public and private real estate development, consulting, and urban renewal. Currently a principal and CEO at Conversion Management Associates, Inc., he also has served as Deputy Director of the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency. His projects include the development of Oakland's City Center and Jack London Square, successful presentation of the Lucasfilm proposal to San Francisco's Presidio Trust and completion of the new Lucasfilm Headquarters Ranch in Marin. Glenn and his Swiss-born wife, Gaby, enjoy meeting I-House residents and frequently invite students to their home or for a sail on San Francisco Bay.

George Raad, an architect, traveler, a running and tennis enthusiast, and former I-House Board member was honored as Alumnus of the Year. He has played a key role in the renovation program at International House, bringing it into the present while maintaining its architectural heritage. George served on the Board from 1992 to 2001 and co-chaired the House Committee. He also served on the Executive Committee and is a current member of the House Committee. George was born and raised in Jerusalem, Palestine, and came to International House at a time when veterans and many whose lives had been disrupted by the war were streaming into the University to get an education. It was a time remembered by alumni as The Golden Age, filled with hope for building a peaceful world. Mr. Raad earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in architecture from UC Berkeley. As a principal with the firm of Raad/Uesugi and Associates in San Francisco, his architectural projects include motion picture theaters, retail stores, and shopping centers. George and his wife, Lorraine, are frequent participants in I-House activities.
