ALUMNI NEWS AND NOTES

1930-1940
Betty Burton reflects the sentiments of many alumni in her description of the impact of I-House experiences, "My years residing at I-House with many foreign students from 1937 to 1939 established a `code of ethics' reaching beyond the boundaries of the U.S. and guided me in developing an understanding and firm relationships with peoples of all countries. If everyone had the opportunity to live in an environment like I-House, much of the bias and hostility that exists among peoples of different nations would be eradicated or at least reduced. I-House is truly a center of learning and applying principles of character, ethics and humanitarianism." Betty's career with the Red Cross brought her in contact with peoples and cultures around the world.

Heinz Bertelsmann is a professor emeritus at Bard College.

After a visit to I-House, Art Tichenor writes, "There is much that has changed but to an old-timer like me, it is still the same wonderful place for so many memories. He recalled giving a building tour to Prime Minister Nehru of India who wanted to see how Indian students were living.

1940-1950
Juan Wilson writes, "After 39 year in the practice of preventative medicine, I retired and fulfilled my dream of living in Southern France. We sing with a local choir, hike with a hiking club, and are involved with the local cultural club. Four years at I-House was great preparation for what I do today!

George Gourrich, who is now retired, is the Founding Chairman of Emeritus Medical Staff at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, and volunteers on the Clinical Faculty of the UCLA School of Medicine.

From Terje Jacobsen who returned to Norway after a month in Berkeley, "It is quite unreal how quickly you can be moved from one end of the world to the other these days. Physically, I am all here, but my soul is left far behind. Give me back the good, old days of ocean liners. When you traveled in comfort, made friends on the journey, and felt the anticipation rise as you got nearer to shore, a new world to explore at the other end. Berkeley feels like home. I always visit I-House, the place where so many lasting friendships have been formed over the years.

Gloria Meyer Exline is mayor of Vallejo, CA.

Lorna Stone Rubinchik writes, "For me, I-House has been a state of mind projected into my existence, one of listening, understanding, friendship, and an insatiable curiosity to visit the many lands represented by I-House. Lorna has a little theatre, the Ventura Court Theatre, in Studio City, CA

Charles Holloway and Marilyn Hall Holloway visited I-House just before the U.C.-Nevada football game (we won that one!). "We ate in the Dining Hall and had a fine lunch. The place is looking good!"

Patricia Mathewson is a docent at Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, CA.

1950-1960

Henry Lurie recently started a three-year term on the Cal Alumni Association Board of Directors.

John Conroy stopped by during travels that have included visits with Basil Hoare, Dick Wilson, Terttu Puhakka, Mahmood Suleiman, Jack Mahshi and Celeste Lipow MacLeod.

Lloyd Barber stopped by in January. He is retired after serving for 15 years as President of the University of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. Roy Portugal was in Rio de Janeiro where he saw Nicolau Bina Machado who is retired from Occidental Petroleum in Brazil and Daphnis Ferreira Souto who has a medical consulting firm. They send their hellos.

John Corley finished a second Master's, this time in English, and is writing an anthology of Mexican and Mexican American stories.

1960-1970

Louis Drouot writes from France, "The spirit of International House blossomed within my family. The photo shows it all! Sunday Supper here has the flavor and the laughs of I-House back in 1969-'70!" Shown above, Louis with his wife, Magali, and their children from left: Emmanuel, Thomas (from South Korea), Helene (from Madagascar), and Marie (from South Korea). Louis founded Erdyn Consultants which focuses on Industrial R&D.

Marta Borges sends greetings from her home in Cuba, "With my heart full of wonderful, beautiful and unforgettable memories" from her stay at I-House with the International Community Development Seminar.

Joan Plaisted is Ambassador to the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Republic of Kiribati, two tropical countries in the Pacific.

Ojars Greste teaches computer applications for building construction at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia.

Walter Graf is a professor and Director of the Hydraulics Laboratory at the Ecole Poytechnique in Lausanne, Switzerland. He has just finished three books on fluvial hydraulics in French but soon to be published in English.

Jerry Bloch practices law in Santa Ana CA and lives with his wife and two children in Laguna Beach where he serves on the Board of Directors of the Laguna Beach Art Museum and is a member of the Board of Trustees of the UCLA Foundation.

Congratulations to Anne Braude who made her first fiction sale this year, "The Quincunx Solution," a story about an alchemist's cat that appeared in Catfantastic IV.

1970-1980

Owen Clayton volunteers as Second Cantor at St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church in Irvine, CA and prepares liturgical translations for the parish. "Knew the Greek would come in handy one day!"

Jaime Benchimol writes, "It has been 16 years since I left I-House, but to this day I still miss it!"

Kent Fogleman is a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, CA, specializing in Alaskan earthquakes. "My wife, Elaine, and I will celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary in September. Twins, Sam and Shayna, will turn 9 in May. Sam is a Muscular Dystrophy Association's Goodwill Ambassador." Kent keeps in contact with Lotis Cajoleas, Vassilis Evmolpidis, Friedrich Janko, Norm Raley, and Iqbal Serang. Juliana Cheng performed with the Watsonville Band during Fourth of July festivities at the White House. Hidefumi Yamagami returned to Tokyo after four years in London where he enjoyed the Cal Alumni Club, Berkeley in Britain, and re-connected with I-House friend Karen Greenberg McConnell.

Thomas Mollers is a law professor at the University of Augsburg, Germany.

Eric Schmidt, Chief of Technology at Sun Microsystems, was named CEO of Novell, a software company, in March.

1980-1990

Ronny Kusuma Muntoro is President of PT Aerowisata in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Susan Covino Bradforth works for USC's International Business Education and Research Center. Stephen Bradforth is a faculty member at USC. They met at I- House and married last year.

From Katie Leydorf Dustin, "I'm really looking forward to the 80's reunion. It would be great if staff are there, too - Barbara Lynch, Sherry Warrick, Betsy Bacon, and Vangie Buell!"

Editor's note: They're all planning to come! Michael Beals and his wife Elissa vacationed in Europe where they visited Manuel Bronstein, Paul Carminati, Marie Toulemonde and Bruno Moatti Names. Alysoun Mahoney coordinates courses in Asian and Near Eastern languages and English as a second language for UC Berkeley Extension.

Ann Sutter, a "starving fine artist," writes that she is, "Avidly pursuing the forbidden fruit."

Walter Willenkin works for an industrial fastener wholesaler in Osaka where he lives in the home of his wife's family, a house he rebuilt after the quake.

John Weinkopf is moving to Brazil where he will work in international business transactions for the Rio office of law firm, Baker and McKenzie.

Ih-Chin Chen is an electronic engineer with Texas Instruments and was honored as a TI Fellow.

Soun Pil Kwon is a Junior Professional Officer at the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna.

Maryam Talakoob is business application developer for Gap in their global financial unit. She married Sina Tarassoly and they have a son, Camron.

Shigeru Kojima edits a Japanese-English newsletter at the University of Shizuoka in Japan, promoting global communication and understanding.

Margaret Andrews is a management consultant and lives in the Boston area with her husband and two young sons.

1990-Present

Natasha Balakova married Philippe Wallart last May in Geneva where Natasha works for Credit Suisse.

Dimity Hodge is a strategic consultant with Andersen Consulting in Sydney, Australia.

Francesca Vassallo is in a Ph.D./M.A. program at Georgetown University studying comparative politics with a concentration on German and European Studies.

Slobodan Simic is a lecturer in the math department at USC.

Adrian Bertolini is a research fellow in mechanical engineering at Monash University in Clayton, Australia. He is training to be an official at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

Marlyn Kho married Michael Lee last September in Minnesota. Peter Cheng, Singe Morimoto and Anders Yang attended the wedding. The newlyweds honeymooned in Hawaii and are residing in Bloomington MN.

Another I-House couple, Sylvia Saltzstein and Cliff Ho are both working at Sandia National Labs in Albuquerque. Sylvia is an industrial hygienist and Cliff works in Geohydrology. Cliff "had a blast" teaching Thermodynamics at University of NM.

Sophie Marnette married Ted Piepenbrock last year in Belgium. Sophie teaches French at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. Na Choo, who works in corporate taxation with Price Waterhouse in Melbourne, enjoyed a visit by Pauny Rezai and plans to join Alma Ortega and Simone Barrelier to visit Lidia Piolanti in Madrid. She would enjoy hearing from IH alumni working with PW.

Masatfumi Nakahigashi who teaches corporate law at Nagoya University in Japan writes, "Students don't study so hard as those in I-House. Sigh!"

David Ehrlich writes from Brazil, where he is working as a civil engineer, that he is looking forward to returning for a Master's degree.
