EDITH COLIVER ALUMNA OF THE YEAR Celebration and Awards Dinner, May 5 |

International House will honor Edith Simon Coliver as the 1999 Alumna of the Year at the eleventh annual Celebration and Awards Dinner on May 5. Coliver, who lived in International House from 1940-'43, has had a life-long commitment to human rights. A native of Germany, she was educated in Germany, England, and the U.S. After graduating from Cal with a B.A. in International Relations and Language, she went on to a distinguished career including serving as an interpreter and analyst at the Nuremberg Trials and as an executive with The Asia Foundation. Coliver was assigned to the Philippines as the Foundation's first woman Representative. She later served as the Foundation's Representative in Taiwan. Coliver's areas of specialization include the democratic process, judicial education, and human rights. She is a founding member of the Women's Interfaith Dialogue on the Middle East and serves on the I-House Board of Directors. |

International House will also honor Michael Morgan, Music Director and Conductor of the Oakland East Bay Symphony and Artistic Director of the Oakland Youth Orchestra, for his commitment to exposing young people of all ethnic backgrounds to many forms of musical expression.

Mr. Morgan crosses cultures with music. He recently led the Oakland Youth Orchestra on a tour of Costa Rica, Cuba, and Mexico. The IBJ Foundation, Inc. of the Industrial Bank of Japan, Ltd. will be recognized for its commitment to the education of global citizens and for its support of International House's Multicultural/International Speakers Bureau. This program enriches social studies curriculum and promotes the concept of global citizenship in California's public schools. Co-chairs of the event are Dennis and Elizabeth Bonney, Vangie and Bill Buell, Richard Buxbaum and Kay Hartshorn, Lupita and Ken Kashiwahara, and Arun and Rummi Sarin. | |||
