University of Chicago officials announced last spring that International House, Chicago would close on June 30, 2000, due to insufficient funding for renovations. Residents and alumni immediately launched a Save the International House campaign.

While many issues still remain, the University appears committed to preserving the House and involving residents and the University community in decisions regarding International House in the future. According to Executive Director Ralph Nicholas, “We can look forward to a period of hard work in carrying out fund raising and renovations that are called for, but the struggle is over and International House will continue.”

A search is underway for an Executive Director to replace Ralph Nicholas who plans to return to anthropological research.
