Increasing global awareness through social studies curricula and the impact of modern urban life on multicultural education were the themes of a conference sponsored by International House and held at the House on November 15. Conference participants were also introduced to I-House as a resource for intercultural programs, speakers, and teaching materials.

The conference was the culmination of a three-year grant awarded to I-House by the Industrial Bank of Japan Foundation. The grant has helped support the International/Multicultural Speakers Bureau, a program that brings I-House residents into classrooms throughout the Bay Area to share their cultures.

Dr. Pedro Noguera, UC Assistant Professor of Education and one of the leading experts in multicultural education, gave the keynote address to an audience which included educators, UC faculty, parents, and community members.
