Alumni from throughout Europe came to London for the 1998 European Symposium presented by the Haas School of Business at Cal in partnership with International House, October 2-4. A highlight of the program was the keynote speech on the global economy by Laura D'Andrea Tyson, former U.S. Chief Economic Advisor and current Haas Dean.

A number of I-House alumni participated as speakers and panelists including Reinhard Schulte-Braucks (IH 1976-'77) and Heiko Glander (IH 1987). In addition to an impressive program which included distinguished Haas School faculty and industry speakers, participants were treated to social events at the House of Lords and the newly restored Globe Theatre.

The International House video, directed by Board member Lupita Aquino Kashiwahara, prompted a very positive and emotional response from alums and non-alums alike in support of the mission and spirit of International House. Following the reception, Joe matched tricks with a professional magician while dazzling symposium dinner guests.

We are grateful to the corporate sponsors that helped make the symposium possible. The 1998 European Symposium sponsors were Arthur Andersen, Bankers Trust Corporation, Citibank, and Morgan Stanley Dean Witter.

Following the London Symposium, Joe Lurie and Director of Development & Alumni Relations Melinda Carmack headed to Amsterdam for a gathering of I-House alumni. Nearly thirty alumni from the 1950's to 1990's enjoyed a delightful evening of food and reminiscing about I-House times.
