The 1998 University Medal went to Mekhail Anwar '98 who lived in I-House during his junior year, 1996-'97. A physics major with a 3.974 GPA, Anwar recalls, "Sharing my culture and learning about others has been one of my most enjoyable experiences at Cal." At I-House, he organized a display of Bangladeshi food, clothing, music, and art for the annual SpringFest celebration of cultures. Anwar's ambitious plans include going to medical school, earning a Ph.D. in electrical engineering, doing some research and teaching, and launching a bio-tech firm.

The University Medal, established in 1871, is the top honor for a graduating senior.
