NETWORKING COMPLETED FOR RESIDENT ROOMS

International House residents arrived in August to find high speed data connections from every resident room to the University's network and to the Internet. Access to the worldwide network facilitates communication with friends and family worldwide and is an increasingly important resource for academic work.

Residents' reaction to this new tool has been phenomenal. One student remarked, "This is amazing! Now I am on the Internet as soon as I turn my computer on."

Wiring for data connections was funded by a $250,000 contribution from the Bechtel Group. These improvements were made with great care to preserving the architectural integrity of the building.

With this new resource comes the challenge of providing technical support to help residents connect their own computer equipment to the network. Hellmut Meister, Manager of Information Systems, started a program that brings together computer literate residents with fellow residents who need help getting connected. The success of this volunteer effort -- which has made it possible for more than 300 residents to have their computers configured and connected -- is a terrific reflection of the spirit of the House.

The Resident Computer Center provides resources for the many residents who do not have their own equipment. The Center was funded by a gift of real estate from Edith Loewenstein, mother of I-House alumna Anne Loewenstein Mollet (IH 1966).

The next challenge is to complete the House-wide administrative network and give staff access to the campus network. This project received a major boost from I-House alumnus Eric Schmidt, CEO of Novell, who arranged for the contribution of state-of-the-art networking software.

Executive Director Joe Lurie notes, "I am delighted that we can establish this much-needed service at comparatively low cost to the House thanks to close cooperation with the campus, sharing of expenses for the fiber optics cable with Intercollegiate Athletics, and the generosity of alumni and friends."
