I n the past five years, we have heard from almost 50 alumni and friends inquiring about various planned gifts for International House. The letters we've received range from requests for more information on these methods of giving to notes with such messages as "I put you in my Will for a sizable percent of my total estate". Planned gifts and bequests received for International House since 1989 now total more than $800,000!

I n previous newsletters we have shared the stories of a few of these generous individuals. Each and every one leaves an indelible mark on I-House benefiting generations of future residents.

S till, many alumni are unaware of the variety of ways that planned giving can assist their philanthropic goals. By making a planned gift to International House you may be able to:

  • Avoid capital gains tax on appreciated securities or other property.
  • Assure a life income for yourself, a spouse or other beneficiary.
  • Increase your spendable income.
  • Receive a current income tax deduction.
  • Remove assets from your estate, reducing estate and gift taxes.

A sample of some of the planned giving methods available to you include:

  • Charitable Remainder Trusts, Pooled Income Funds, Charitable Gift Annuities, and retained life estates are examples of Life Income Gifts which provide a secure income for life for yourself and/or your loved ones.

  • Charitable Lead Trusts can allow you to transfer assets to your heirs at reduced gift and estate tax costs while providing an annuity or fixed percentage of assets annually to International House for a specific number of years.

  • Bequests, Revocable Trusts, and Irrevocable Trusts are giving methods made through your Will. Bequests may be either outright, contingent, or residuary.
