At a joyous gathering on April 7, the University Section Club and International House celebrated two wonderful accomplishments -- the successful completion of a fundraising campaign for the endowed UC Section Club Room and Board Scholarship Fund at International House and the Twentieth Anniversary of the Centre.

Since the end of World War II, the University Section Club, its Foreign Students Committee and International House have been partners in service to foreign students at Berkeley. They have assisted thousands of students and scholars at UC Berkeley through programs, services, housing assistance, awards of need-based grants and loans, and home hospitality.

The Centre is a resource in Berkeley dedicated to helping international students and scholars adjust to a new environment. Weekly meetings at the University YWCA offer a chance to visit with other international visitors and with the volunteers of the Centre and to seek advice on everything from where to find certain foods to perfecting English language skills. Special field trips to points of interest are offered during the year, as well as small discussion groups. The Centre is entirely volunteer run and provides invaluable service to the international community at Cal.

In the spirit of international friendship, the Section Club, with the enthusiastic leadership of members Trudi Frei and Ellen Hahn, launched

a campaign to raise $25,000 to endow a room and board scholarship at International House. The scholarship will benefit both international and American students. International House is deeply grateful for the generosity and commitment of the members of the University Section Club. We look forward to awarding the first scholarship for the 1999-2000 academic year.
