Will hazardous materials be involved in the construction?

Residents can be assured they will not be exposed to hazardous materials. I-House management and UC Berkeley take the risk of hazardous materials very seriously, and ensure that all projects test for such materials before beginning construction projects, and comply with all rules and regulations regarding the abatement and disposal of all hazardous materials.

How much noise can I expect?

No loud work will happen before 9 am. Most noise will happen inside the building although there may be some noise in the loading driveway area for deliveries and removal of construction materials. There will be loud noise from the following procedures during different phases of the project: demolition, roto-hammering, metal cutting, drilling, screwing, etc. Efforts will be made to confine the noise to the project area as much as possible.

Will there be dust, debris & odors?

Dust, debris and odors are going to occur with renovations of this magnitude. Management of dust, debris and odors is the responsibility of the contractor with I-House oversight. I-House management will work with the Contractor to quickly resolve any issues that may arise.

Will there be areas of I-House that are not safe?

Signage will be clearly posted in regard to all safety issues. I-House management will communicate all safety concerns clearly to protect anyone near the project area. Signage is provided by the contractor and I-House. The contractor is required to work in accordance with CAL-OSHA Safety Standards and other codes which dictate that no unsafe conditions exist. If you observe any unsafe condition or occurrences please report them right away.
