1) When do you accept apps for:
a) Fall – We begin accepting applications during the month of March 1, 2010 for Fall 2010.
b) Spring - We begin accepting applications during the month of October 1, 2009 for Spring 2010.
c) Summer Sessions – We begin accepting applications during the month of February, 2010 for summer 2010.

2) When should I apply?
Apply as early as possible – the earlier the application is submitted, the more likely you are to receive a room offer. We prioritize our applicants based on the application submission date. Late applicants may be placed on a wait list if I-House is full.
3) What are the accepted forms of affiliation?
Any official document showing you will be a registered student/visitor/researcher during the term you want to live at I-House. This can include a class schedule, registration status, letter of invitation, VSPA letter, DS 2019, or letter from your advisor.
4) What if I don’t study at UC Berkeley?
We offer housing to visiting scholars and researchers to the UC Berkeley campus, and also welcome students from the Wright Institute and Graduate Theological Union.
5) Do you accept paper applications?
No. We only accept applications submitted through our website.
6) How long does it take before I hear from Admissions?
After completing the online application, you should receive a confirmation email within 24 hours asking for your document of affiliation. After we receive your document of affiliation, it takes approximately 5 business days to process your application.
7) How can I pay the application fee?
You must pay online by credit card when you submit your application. For the deposit and rent you may also pay by check, money order, wire transfer, debit card or cash or credit card (VISA only). You can make these payments in person at I-House or send them by mail (note that cash payments must be paid in person).
8) Can I get housing w/o the meal plan?
We only offer an inclusive room and board contract.
9) Can I transfer from I-House to campus dorm or vice versa?
I-House is separate from the UC Berkeley dormitories, so you cannot transfer your residency to the campus dormitories. Each housing option requires separate applications and has separate policies.
10) How late are you open for check ins?
You may Check-In at the Front Desk after 5:00 PM on your scheduled Move-In date unless otherwise stated in your contract. I-House Resident Assistants are available to assist you and answer your questions 24-hours a day daily. You can reach them by dialing (510) 642-9490 or from your room phone by dialing 2-9490.
11) What should I bring when checking in?
Bring a photo ID to check in at the front desk.
12) Can I arrive early?
Early Arrival information comes with your housing packet. It has to be requested and payment has to be made in order for you early arrival request to be considered. We will send you an email confirmation with your date of arrival once your request has been granted.
13) Are bathrooms and showers shared? How many are there?
Bathrooms and showers are shared but are separated by gender. There are 2 bathrooms and 2 shower facilities for each gender on each floor for the exception of the 8th floor which only has a female bathroom and one shower facility.
14) Are rooms coed?
Rooms are not coed.
15) Who do I contact regarding my application?

16) Can I have mail or packages sent to me before I arrive?
No
17) How do I get my roommate’s information?
Please contact the Front Desk at (510) 642-9490. The Front Desk staff will provide you with the name and email of your roommate.
18) Do I have a phone at my room?
Yes. Your telephone number is on a small plaque, usually on the back of your closet door. Upon entering your room, please pick-up your phone and check for dial tone. In addition, please check the each side of your phone to make sure your ringer is turned on so you can hear calls coming in. If your phone is not working, make sure everything is plugged in securely. If it still does not work, contact UC Berkeley visit Resident Telephone Service at http://www.rts.berkeley.edu or by calling 643-7000.
19) Where do I find more information about I-House, including its policies and procedures?
Please read our Resident Handbook in our website, under Living at I-House > Resident Corner. The handbook has a wealth of information pertaining to anything you need to know about I-House. Take the time to familiarize yourself with the handbook.
20) Can I request a specific room?
You may request a specific room, but we cannot guarantee that this will be your final room assignment.
21) Can you accommodate special needs?
We can accommodate residents with special needs. We recommend that you call or email us before applying so we can hear your requests prior to receiving your application.
22) How long does it take to get a housing offer?
It takes 2 to 3 weeks to process an application, assuming we have received your application fee and proof of affiliation.
23) Do you accept domestic students? Can American students apply?
All students, scholars, and researchers who are affiliated with UC Berkeley, Wright Institute, and Graduate Theological Union may apply.
24) What’s the occupancy at I-House during the Academic Year?
We currently house 579 residents for the Academic Year.
25) I’ve sent all my documents yet I have not heard back, what do I do?

26) Do you accommodate short term stays?
Yes. Please check Admissions for availability.
27) How early can I arrive?
Depending on the term, it is possible to arrive a few days to a few weeks early. When you receive an offer to live at I-House you will find information regarding early arrivals.
28) Can I have a single room as an undergraduate?
No. Single rooms are reserved for graduate and visiting scholar residents. A very limited number of exceptions are made for medical reasons.
29) What is the check in time?

You will find in your Check-In envelope a card containing the combination to open your mailbox. You may pick-up bulk packages by visiting the mailroom during the hours posted on the mailroom door.
31) May I send packages/mail to I-House before I arrive?
Our mailroom capacity is designed to serve current residents. Therefore, please do not mail items in advance as it may cause confusion during sorting and distribution.
32) Where/Whom do I go to if I have questions or concerns?
Do not hesitate to talk to the Resident Support Services (RSS) staff at the Front Desk. They are available to help you 24 hours a day, daily. You can also reach them by calling 2-9490 from your room phone. Concerns of a sensitive nature will remain confidential and be shared with only the relevant management staff.
33) Is smoking allowed at I-House?
Smoking is strictly prohibited at I-House.
34) How can I get to know Berkeley and the Bay Area?
Visit the Program Office for group trips to various Bay Area attractions and events that are rich in cultural explorations, learning opportunities, or are just plain fun. In addition, there are often free dance and exercise lessons for residents and Coffee Hour on Wednesdays. Check your floor bulletin boards for schedule and times.
35) How do I find out where my classes are located and how do I get around Berkeley?
The Front Desk has complimentary copies of the UC Berkeley Campus map along with an index at the back showing all buildings at the University and how to locate them. For your convenience, there is also a map of the City of Berkeley for sale at the Front Desk.
36) What should I bring for my room?
Very little. Your room is furnished with a twin size bed, a dresser, a desk, a desk chair, and desk lamp as well as ceiling light. Linens, blankets, pillows are available for rent at the Resident Service Center (RSC) in the Ground Floor Laundry Room. In addition, you may also rent other items such as an iron, mini refrigerator, a microwave, or television among other items from the RSC rather than bringing them. See RSC fees in the 2008-09 Resident Handbook. Click on "Fast Reference" or go to pages 64 - 65.
37) Do you have storage?
Yes, storage lockers located near the Resident Service Center are available for current or returning residents.
38) Do I bring my own blanket, pillow, linen?
We have linen available for rent. Each resident gets a pillow free of charge. You will need to purchase sheets for a ‘twin’ size bed if you decide not to rent your linen from I-House.
39) What forms of public transportation are available close to International House?
IHouse is a 20 minute walk away from BART. AC Transit and the campus shuttles have stops next to the House.
40) How do I get from SFO/Oakland airport to I-House?
BART goes directly to both Oakland and SFO. You may also use a shuttle service or a cab.
41) What activities do you provide?
I-House provides educational, cultural, social and recreational services for residents and members of International House.

42) Is there a kitchen I can use?
We do have a small kitchen that is available for use by residents.
43) Do you accommodate special diets? Vegetarian?
Dining Services provides a variety of meal options, including vegetarian selections. Although not guaranteed, special diets can usually be accommodated within our facility. Residents can arrange a meeting with our dining staff to discuss any special dietary concerns or food allergies by e-mailing gbeitch@berkeley.edu.
44) Do you have a library, Quiet place to study?
Our library is open 24 hours a day and features international newspapers and a variety of periodicals. It offers a congenial, yet quiet, study atmosphere.
45) How will the stadium construction impact me? When will it be finished?
I-House is adjacent to the University Stadium where construction of a state-of-the-art Student High Performance Athletic Center is occurring. Construction at that site takes place between 7am and 4:30pm weekdays and 9am-6pm on occasional Saturdays. I-House is working closely with Campus to minimize disruptions, but construction will generate noise and dust.
46) What parking lots/spaces are available?
Parking on the UC Berkeley campus is very difficult. The I-House Lot is closed for stadium construction until 2011. Street parking at meters is free after 6 pm. In non-metered areas, parking is free for two hours and unregulated after 7 pm. Meters are free with a California disabled placard.
47) What are quiet hours?
Creating noise that unreasonably disrupts residents or neighboring community members at any time is unacceptable. In addition, residents are asked to be especially considerate during the quiet hours from 11pm-10am on weekdays, and 1am-10am on weekends. For both the academic year semesters and for the summer sessions, around-the-clock quiet hours begin on the last day of instruction and continue to the end of the term.
48) Do you have wireless internet?
The public and common areas on the ground and second floor, including the Café with its patios, are served by the campus-wide wireless AirBears network. It is maintained by the university. More information on AirBears.
