Getting Connected

Residents getting connectedAll computers connected to the UC Berkeley network must be secured in accordance with UC Berkeley’s Minimum Security Standards for Network Devices.  These standards ensure that all computers on the network are secured from each other by requiring installation of antivirus software, a firewall and all relevant operating system updates.

1.  Windows users should uninstall any antivirus software and third party firewalls, and install the Symantec Client Security software. Residents with a CalNet ID can obtain this software at no charge from http://software-central.berkeley.edu.

2.  The next step in getting connected is to obtain your account registration code. Academic year residents obtain their code from the Information Systems Department at no charge.  Summer term residents can obtain their account registration code from the cashier after paying the $40 summer network access fee.

3.  Once your computer is secure and you have your account registration code, you are ready to create your user account. (Note: if you do not own a computer and intend to use only the I-House computers, you still need a user account). When you connect your Ethernet cable to the data-port in your room and open your browser you will be presented with a “Welcome to International House” website that has detailed instructions on how to create your account and log on to the Cisco Clean Access System. For more information about Cisco Clean Access please see our Cisco Clean Access Introduction page.
