International
House provides free wired and wireless connections to the Internet for our academic-year registered residents. All that one needs to use the Internet is a network-ready
computer and a Category 5 cable if you wish to connect through a wired connection. Resident rooms are equipped with one data port, which are not the same as the
telephone jacks (RJ-11). Once the ethernet cable connected
at both ends to the computer and the wall port, the computer will obtain an IP address automatically. This
instruction is provided by I-House Information Systems.

Why do I have to log in using Cisco Clean Access (CCA)?
International House is making every effort to make your network experience productive and secure. Because the network is shared by all residents, one infected computer can affect everyone in the house. Clean Access protects every computer on the network greatly reducing virus outbreaks and vulnerabilities.

Am I required to install software on my computer?
All Microsoft Windows and Mac computers are required to install the Cisco Clean Access (CCA) agent software to connect to our network. You will also be required to use a UC Berkeley approved antivirus program and a host based firewall. The university provides Symantec Endpoint Security (for PC) or Norton Antivirus (for Mac) at no charge to most members of the campus community at http://software-central.berkeley.edu. You will also be require to install all Windows critical security updates before you may access the internet.

What is Cisco Clean Access (CCA)?
Cisco Clean Access (CCA) is an application that will check certain security settings on your Windows and Mac computers to make sure that your system is up-to-date with required security patches and report this status to the server. No personal information is sent to the server besides the username and password you supply. You must use CCA for your Microsoft Windows PC and/or Mac computer in order to authenticate and use our network. Current required security requirements include Symantec Endpoint Security or other approved antivirus (for PC), Norton Antivirus (for Mac), all OS Service Packs, critical updates and patches.

Are there printers available?
Yes, printeres are available in the Residential Computing Center (RCC) on the third floor. You will need to purchase a "print card" from the Resident
Services Center located in the laundry room on the ground floor. Once you have the print card, you can print from any of the comuputers in the RCC or from your own computer after setting up printing from your room.

I
follwed the instructions and I still can't connect to the network. What else can I try?
If
you are having trouble connecting to the Internet, one or more of the
following might be the cause of the problem:
- If you are connected using our wireless network, you must use an 802.11g, 802.11a or 802.11n network card. Older 802.11b cards are not supported.
- If you are connected using a CAT-5 Ethernet cable, ensure your cable is properly connected to both your computer
and the data port. Your cable could be defective as well. If you have a spare one, try it.
- The
Ethernet card may not be properly installed in your computer. Delete the
network adapter from the Device Manager and reboot the system. Re-install
the Ethernet card if the operating system does not do so automatically.
- The
drivers for your network card may be corrupt or need updating. Visit
the web site of your computer or network card manufacturer from RCC to download new software.
- A
virus has compromised your system.
- In
rare instances, the campus network may be temporarily down, which will
prevent access to the Internet even if your computer is set up correctly.
- Occasionally
faulty wiring in residential rooms may interrupt Internet service. If your computer works using another network jack in the international house, this is possibly the case.
If you still are unable to access the internet, come to the Information Systems Office on the ground floor.
