Tonight! Drink the Bitter Root: A Search for Justice and Healing in Africa

Author Gary Geddes explores the human suffering that world nations and local players are unleashing in Africa to destabilize and loot the continent in Drink the Bitter Root. This provocative, emotionally charged account of his travels in sub-Saharan Africa is a masterful blend of history, reportage, testimonial and memoir. There will be a book signing at the conclusion of this presentation.

Sunday Supper Reminder

Sunday, February 12, 5 pm
The event begins with a reception, followed by a catered buffet meal, a speaker and a variety show featuring talented I-House residents.  All tickets are sold out, but if you wish to be on the waiting list, email ihprograms@berkeley.edu. If a space opens up you will be notified. If you cannot attend, please let Program Office know to release your space to someone else. Attendance is limited to I-House residents, with priority given to new residents or those who have never attended Sunday Supper.


I-House Film Series: A Matter of Size

A Matter of Size is an Israeli comedy (yes, comedy!) like nothing you've seen before, a hilarious and heart-warming tale about a coming out of a different kind: four overweight guys who learn to love themselves through the Japanese sport of sumo wrestling." This film is the winner of 3 Israeli Academy Awards, winner of 10 Film Festival Audience Awards and is Co-sponsored by the Consulate General of Israel and the International House.

Interested in applying for a RA position?

Our RA application for Summer 2012 and Academic Year 2012-2013 will be available on the Resident Portal the week of February 21. The deadline to apply will be 12 noon Friday, March 9.  Although the RA application is not available just yet, you can begin your RA application process by getting one letter of recommendation as well 3 references ready and attach them to the RA application when you complete it.  The letter and the references have to come from a previous or current supervisor or from a professor, and not from a friend or a family member.  

Mark your calendar!  If you have any questions about the RA position, attend our Informational Meeting on Thursday, February 23 at 6pm, in the Home Room.


I-House Offers Financial Aid for Room & Board

Room and board assistance for international students, U.S. citizens and permanent residents is being made available for the academic year 2012-2013 and Fall Semester 2012. Those eligible are graduate or upper-division students who will have already completed one academic year at UC Berkeley and who
demonstrate financial need. Applications are available on the Resident Portal. The application deadline is Thursday, March 1, 2012.

Border Crossing Essay Contest!

Deadline for Entries is April 12 The Border Crossing Essay Award is given to three residents who best capture the essence of their I-House experience in a composition. Write about dramatic cross-cultural encounters you have experienced and their impact.

The submission deadline for essays is April 12, 2012. The winners are announced, at a special ceremony held during Sunday Supper in April. The first place winner will receive $250, second place, $150 and third place, $100.

Meet Your I-House Health Workers

This semester I-House has four great health workers that volunteer their time to promote well-being. Christina Geraci, Jami Gordillo-Kerby, Andrew Park, and Heather Cohen. They are great resources because they act as a liaison between I-House and the health center (Tang Center). Health tips will be posted around the House once a week. Make sure to watch out for activities planned throughout the year!
