Yoshi Akiba: Bridging Cultures in Business, Art & Life

Join us for a Multi-Media Experience with Yoshi Akiba: Bridging Cultures in Business, Art, and Life as part of I-House’s International Women's Day Celebration. Beyond running her award-winning jazz clubs in Oakland and San Francisco (Yoshi’s), Mrs. Akiba, Bay Area artist, entrepreneur and I-House Alumna and Board Member, is a UC Berkeley graduate and teacher who has successfully integrated traditional Japanese Buddhist art forms with Western culture. Yoshi will be interviewed by Diane Dwyer, NBC News Anchor and fellow I-House Board member.
Musical guests: Bay Area based jazz singer/ radio broadcaster Melanie O'Reilly and pianist Frank Martin will perform 3 songs, including one song to interweave with Yoshi 's dance performance.

I-House Film Series: San Yuan Li
Tuesday, March 13, 7 pm China's rapid modernization literally traps the village of San Yuan Li within the surrounding skyscrapers of Guangzhou, a city of 12 million people. The villagers move to a different rhythm, thriving on subsistence farming and traditional crafts. They resourcefully reinvent their traditional lifestyle by tending rice paddies on empty city lots and raising chickens on makeshift rooftop coops.

RA positions at I-House
Our RA application for Summer 2012 and Academic Year 2012-2013 will be available on the Resident Portal. The deadline to apply will be 12 noon Friday, March 9. Although the RA application is not available just yet, you can begin your RA application process by getting one letter of recommendation as well 3 references ready and attach them to the RA application when you complete it. The letter and the references have to come from a previous or current supervisor or from a professor, and not from a friend or a family member.

Financial Aid for Room & Board
Room and board assistance for international students, U.S. citizens and permanent residents is being made available for the academic year 2012-2013 and Fall Semester 2012. Those eligible are graduate or upper-division students who will have already completed one academic year at UC Berkeley and who demonstrate financial need. Applications are available on the Resident Portal. The application deadline is Thursday, March 1, 2012.
Border Crossing Essay Contest!
Deadline for Entries is April 2 The Border Crossing Essay Award is given to three residents who best capture the essence of their I-House experience in a composition. Write about dramatic cross-cultural encounters you have experienced and their impact.
The submission deadline for essays is April 2, 2012. The winners are announced, at a special ceremony held during Sunday Supper in April. The first place winner will receive $250, second place, $150 and third place, $100. See the 2011 Essay Contest Winners.
