Chris Anderson, Editor-in-Chief of Wired Magazine, will discuss a new form of entrepreneurship taking root around the world. People are applying the Web’s social and innovation models to DIY “small batch” manufacturing, leading to what Mr. Anderson calls “the continuing industrialization of the Maker Movement”.

I-House Speaker Series: The Mugging of Main Street in America-Implications for the World with Robert Scheer

Robert Scheer, Editor-in-Chief of Truthdig.com, has built a reputation for strong social and political writing over his 30 years as a journalist. His in-depth interviews have made headlines, including the famous Playboy magazine interview in which Jimmy Carter confessed to the lust in his heart and notable Los Angeles Times interviews with Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and many other prominent political and cultural figures. A USC professor and radio personality on Left, Right and Center with Arianna Huffington, Scheer is author of The Great American Stickup: How Reagan Republicans and Clinton Democrats Enriched Wall Street While Mugging Main Street. Mr. Scheer will speak to the current social, political, and economic climate in the U.S. and its implications for the world today.

Kalpakam Award for Volunteer Service
The Kalpakam Award for outstanding volunteerism honors an American or international I-House resident who has made sustained, exceptional contributions to the community, whether by tutoring, working with the homeless or handicapped, fundraising, special causes, or other types of volunteer service. In the past this has included counseling prisoners, mentoring disadvantaged students, and using animal pets to provide therapy for the seriously ill, but examples of suitable work for this award are endless!
Nominees cannot self-nominate. Nomination should be made by another party through submission to I-House Program Office of a hard copy/soft copy one-page letter describing in depth the nominee’s sustained ongoing voluntary work in the San Francisco Bay Area, and some of its positive impacts.
Nomination Deadline: Monday, April 9, 2012
The winner will be honored at the Spring Candlelight Sunday Supper in late April, and photos may appear in the I-House Times Newsletter.
