The I-House Connection: September 2025

September 11, 2025

Dear I-House Community,

Last weekend, 272 residents embarked on I-House's annual resident retreat, a tradition many of you will remember as the magical beginning of your own I-House journey. For the first time, we ventured to Cal's Lair of the Golden Bear Camp in the Sierra Nevada mountains, where residents from more than 40 countries gathered to kick off their I-House experiences.

Connections were formed between residents through dialogue sessions that explored cross-cultural understanding and traditional camp experiences, including hiking, swimming in a lake, kayaking, and sharing stories around the s'mores fire. The retreat also featured team-building activities that had residents breaking into smaller groups to tackle challenges like collaborative Lego bridge builds and an obstacle course with sack races, frisbee tosses, and jianzi circles.

During Friday night's welcome, I reminded residents of something our alumni know well: "You may be strangers now, but the friends you make at I-House will be with you throughout your lifetime." I shared that while they'll graduate as alumni of Cal and their respective schools, their I-House connection will prove the most impactful of all.

In these mountains, the next generation of global leaders discovered what our community has always known — that understanding begins with curiosity, and friendship transcends borders. Thanks to your ongoing support, we're able to offer these transformative experiences to our residents every year.

Go Bears!

Ways to Give Back

A Father's Love for I-House Lives On

Desai family

"His eyes would just light up when he would talk about it," Veeral Desai about his father's memories of International House Berkeley.

In 1967, Ashok Desai (IH 1968-69) stepped off his first-ever airplane ride and into his new life in the United States at I-House. Coming from a rural farming village in Gujarat, India, he had never lived anywhere but his homeland. For the Desai family, this moment at I-House represents where their American story began.

I-House became Ashok's transformative gateway to America. "He would rave about how great the cafeteria was. He felt supported in his academic pursuits, but he also personally felt so welcomed as an international student at I-House," Veeral explains.

The I-House community helped him transition from village life to Berkeley's academic setting, where he completed his master's in electrical engineering and launched a successful career as an executive at leading storage companies like Seagate and Western Digital.

Growing up, the Desai family regularly visited I-House during trips to Berkeley. Veeral followed his father as a UC Berkeley grad in 2002.

In 2017, they celebrated Ashok's 50th year in the United States with the entire family, touring his old room and discovering a 1960s photograph that appeared to show him in conversation with another resident.

"You think about the improbability of our family’s story – that my father could come here and be welcomed even though he looked different than others in the community and didn’t speak perfect English,” Veeral reflects. “I-House is the best of Berkeley, the best of community, and the best of what this country represents.”

When Ashok passed away in 2021, the family chose to honor him with a memorial bench on the terrace near I-House's Dining Commons. "It's a place where people gather to connect, to share meals outdoors, to spend time, to reflect," Veeral says of the location. "That space felt perfect for honoring him, like it carries a piece of my Dad."

Gifts in memory of loved ones are a wonderful way to ensure I-House remains a welcoming community for international students like Ashok. Learn more on our Ways to Give page or contact philanthropy@ihouseberkeley.org to discuss options for designating a gift in memory.
