Floor Descriptions

All our residential floors comprise undergraduates, graduate students, and postgraduate scholars from different countries and a variety of academic disciplines. Our residential communities include shared bathrooms, small lounges, and other resource spaces such as small study lounges and the prayer & mediation room.

Each floor develops its own unique community dynamic that varies somewhat from year to year. Below are basic descriptions and specific features of each residential floor. All floors are co-ed with the exception of the 8th floor, but there are separate bathrooms on each floor.

2nd

Our smallest residential floor, conveniently located near the library, dining hall, and other amenities.

3rd & 4th

Our most populated residential floors, each featuring two small lounges.

5th, 6th & 7th

These floors have fewer residents and each includes a small lounge. The 6th floor is also home to the historic wing, where single rooms feature beautifully restored antique furnishings from the early days of International House

8th Floor (Women’s Hall)

A single-sex residential community for women, preferred by some residents for personal, cultural, or religious reasons. The floor is home to approximately 40 residents and includes a small lounge space.

Disclaimer: International House strives to be a safe, respectful, and quiet living environment that supports its residents' academic success and well-being. However, applicants should be aware that International House is a traditional residence hall setting in a busy residential area on the edge of the UC Berkeley campus that is home to various student co-ops, fraternities, and sororities. It is also adjacent to two popular campus event venues - Memorial Stadium and the Greek Theater. As a result, there is a high level of activity in the neighborhood which can cause some level of outside noise and disruption at times. In addition, there are some sources of building-related noise from facility equipment inside and outside of the building and municipal services such as garbage collection that create both regular and intermittent noise. This includes noise from the building’s internal steam heating system.
