Summer Frequently Asked Questions

Application Process:

When should I apply?

Due to high demand and limited availability, we suggest you apply as early as possible.  

All Summer information including application launch dates, room and board rates and more can be found here once it is available. 

Summer sessions A and A&D will be given priority. 

What is needed to apply?

Within the application, you will be required to submit the following:

  1. Proof of Age (i.e. government issued photo ID)

  1. Documentation stating your reason for being in Berkeley over the Summer

  1. Short-answer questions

  1. $50 application fee payment

What is needed to accept a housing offer?

You will be required to sign our Terms and Conditions Agreement and submit payment for the full summer session on or before the deadline provided in order to finalize your reservation

Getting Ready:

How do I check in?

General check-in for all Summer Sessions begins at 12 p.m. on the first day of your session. Dates can be found here.

  • Before arriving to I-House, download the Verkada Pass App on your mobile phone and create an account using the email you have listed in Starrez Resident portal
  • Look for the email invitation from Verkada in your inbox to activate you account.
  • When you arrive to I-House open the Verkada Pass app to open the doors.
  • Login to Starrez Resident portal for Self-check in information.
  • Review this video on how to access your mailboxes. 

If you run into any issues during the self check-in process there will be staff to assist from 9AM to 4PM at the Front Desk. You can also contact Resident Assistant (RA) on duty at +1 (510) 282-0092 for assistance. 

Can I arrive early?

We are not able to accommodate any early arrivals. We recommend checking the move-in dates and planning your travel accordingly.

Can I arrive late?

Yes.  You may arrive late however, you will be financially responsible for the full session.

Can I store my luggage at I-House?

Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate luggage storage prior to your check-in date.

What should I bring for my room?

Very little. Your room is furnished with a regular twin size bed, dresser, nightstand, desk, desk chair, and desk lamp as well as an overhead ceiling light.  Each room is also equipped with a radiator, allowing you to control the heat within your room.  Linens (bedding, towels and pillows) are not provided. Please see our What to Bring (pdf) for more information and a list of prohibited items.

Can I have mail or packages sent to me before I arrive?

Yes, you may order packages at I-House beginning 10 days prior to your arrival. Please make sure to include your room number when you place an order. You will be able to view your room number in the I-House Resident Portal 10 days prior to your arrival. You will receive an email from I-House when your package is processed and ready to be picked up.

If you use Amazon, we recommend having your orders shipped to the Amazon Hub Locker at the Student Union. You may even get your packages more quickly. Once your Amazon package is delivered, you'll receive an e-mail notification with a unique pickup code that will be valid for three days. You can pick up your packages at the Amazon Pickup Location on campus at a time that's convenient for you. If you purchase something and want to return it, you can drop it off at a pickup location regardless of where it was originally delivered.

How do I connect to the Wireless Internet Connection and access my Mailbox: 

WiFi: Eduraom is the official Wi-Fi at I-House. To access Eduraom, use your CalNet ID. You are still able to access Wi-Fi under Berkeley-Visitors without a CalNet ID by accepting the terms of use.

Mailbox:

Once you have checked in, you may access detailed mailbox and Wi-Fi instructions by logging into your Resident Portal and clicking the “IHouse ID and Mailbox” tab at the top.

How do I get from SFO/Oakland airport to I-House?

BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) goes directly from both Oakland International Airport (OAK) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Downtown Berkeley, where you can take a taxi, Lyft or Uber from BART to International House—about a 5-minute drive.  You may also use a shuttle service or a cab. Please visit the SFO or Oakland Airport websites for comprehensive airport transportation information.

Living at I-House:

What is the population of residents like at I-House?

We currently house about 615 residents for the Academic Year. Of these, about 80 percent are international students from all over the world, including visiting scholars, researchers, and Education Abroad Reciprocity students. Most years, we have about 55 percent graduate students, postdocs, and visiting scholars and 45 percent undergraduates. Visiting scholars constitute around 10 percent of our resident population. The Summer Session population is also diverse and comprised of students from around the world.

Do you accommodate special diets? Vegetarian? Vegan?

Dining Services provide a variety of meal options, including vegetarian and vegan selections. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our dining team at dining@ihouseberkeley.org.

Can I transfer from I-House to a campus dorm or vice versa?

I-House is separate from the UC Berkeley dormitories, so you cannot transfer your residency to the campus dormitories. Each housing option requires a separate application and has separate policies.

How and when do I pay my Room & Board fees?

Summer fees are due in full at the time you accept your offer. There are a variety of ways you can pay your fees. The preferred payment methods are wire transfer or direct deposit. If you have specific questions about payment options (i.e., setting up direct deposit or wire transfer), please contact our accounting team at acctg@ihouseberkeley.org.

Are rooms/floors coed?

Shared rooms are not coed. Each floor is coed, with the exception of the female-only 8th floor.

Are bathrooms and showers shared? How many are there?

Bathrooms and showers are shared, separated by gender. There are two bathrooms and two shower facilities for each gender on each floor.

Can I change my room or my roommate?

During the summer, we do not grant any requests to change rooms or roommates. 

What parking spaces are available?

Parking on the UC Berkeley campus is very difficult.  In non-metered areas, parking is free for two hours and unregulated after 7 p.m. Please see the City of Berkeley parking website for more information.  Meters are free with a California disabled placard.

Who do I go to if I have questions or concerns while living at I-House?

Do not hesitate to talk to an RA or the Resident Support Services (RSS) team. RAs are available 24 hours per day, seven days a week at +1-510-282-0092. You may reach Resident Support Services at RSS@ihouseberkeley.org.

Where do I find more information about I-House, including its policies and procedures?

Please read our Resident Handbook located on our website under Resident Life > Resident Resources. The handbook has a wealth of information pertaining to anything you need to know about I-House. Take the time to familiarize yourself with the handbook.

Is there a kitchen I can use?

We do have a newly updated kitchen/lounge that is available for use by residents. The kitchen includes pots, pans, dishes, utensils and appliances. You can access the kitchen every day from 9AM to 10PM. There is also a microwave conveniently located in the laundry room available for resident use at any time. 

Do you have a library or quiet place to study?

Our library is open 24 hours a day and features international newspapers and a variety of periodicals. It offers a congenial, yet quiet, study atmosphere.  Access is restricted to residents only.

Do you have a laundry room?

We have an on-site laundry room that accepts credit and debit card payments through an application. Download CSCGO on your mobile phone and create an account.

I-House Policies:

What are Quiet Hours?

Creating noise that unreasonably disrupts residents or neighboring community members at any time is unacceptable. In addition, residents are asked to be especially considerate during the Quiet Hours from 11 p.m. -10 a.m. on weekdays, and 1 a.m. -10 a.m. on weekends. For both the academic year semesters and for the summer sessions, around-the-clock quiet hours begin on the last day of instruction and continue to the end of the term. If you need to report a quite hour violation, please call the Resident Advisor on duty at (510) 282-0092 for assistance.

Is smoking allowed at I-House?

Smoking and tobacco use are strictly prohibited inside I-House and the areas surrounding the building. The entire UC Berkeley campus adopted a tobacco-free policy on January 1, 2014, that prohibits tobacco use in any form on all University property. If individuals wish to smoke, they can do so across the street from the property.

Can I have a guest stay with me?

Overnight guests are welcome at I-House in accordance with our Guest Policy, which can be found in the Resident Handbook. All requests must be submitted 7 business days prior to the guest’s arrival date. For residents with a roommate, they must provide written approval from their roommate as well. Female guests will be issued a temporary key to the women's restroom and showers.  All guest stays must be requested and approved in advance by our RSS team by emailing RSS@ihouseberkeley.org.
