John D. Rockefeller, Jr.’s Letter to Robert Sproul

International House is a laboratory for a new kind of experiment — the day-to-day practice of international fellowship among men and women.

You may be familiar with his quote, but have you read the full letter that one of our benefactors sent to then UC President Robert Sproul in 1930?

Here’s an excerpt from the letter:

“Such a community of university students, representing all nations, living together under one roof, will further the cause of peace throughout the world; for peace is the product of knowledge and understanding.”

Alumni Reunion Recap

This year’s I-House Alumni Reunion Brunch was a joyful gathering of I-House alumni and their families. Remarkably, the alumni and families who joined represented alumni from every decade since I-House opened its doors in 1930.

1. Nancy Stock Tivol (IH 1966-67) and her son Steve Tivol (IH 1991-93) joined us for this year’s Alumni Reunion, continuing the Stock and Tivol families’ multigenerational connection to I-House Berkeley. Their family includes eight I-House alumni (so far!) who lived under the dome across the decades — from our opening year in 1930 to the 1940s, 1960s, and 1990s.

2. This photo includes IH alumni (back row) Eunice Dizon (IH 1991-94), (second row from back) Karen Pimentel (IH 1990-92), Anindo Banerjea (IH 1992-94), Sudhir Subramanya (IH 1991-95), (third row) Jennifer Huang (IH 1992-94), Annu Maratukulam (IH 1992-93), Yu-Chien Chou (IH I991-93), and Sophia Chen (IH 1991-97).

3. We were thrilled to have Carolyn Gan (IH 1955-56) and her daughter Kristin Gan join us. Carolyn studied history at Berkeley and spent 28 years as a journalist for Asian Week, the first and largest English-language "voice of Asian America."
