The I-House Connection: May 2023
May 4, 2023

Dear Alumni and Friends,

As we come to the end of the academic year, please join me in extending congratulations to our graduates! In this issue of the I-House Connection, I am proud to announce this year’s Davis Projects for Peace awards, and look forward to hearing of the direct impacts the awardees will make in the lives of others in keeping with I-House’s mission.

Also in this issue, Sam DePetro-Wysuph, our Philanthropy Advisor, shares a recap of our recent alumni reunion in New York City, and we’d like to ask you to mark your calendars for our All Years Reunion to be held at I-House on August 6, 2023.

And last but not least, I hope that you enjoy recent blog posts written by our talented Social Media Ambassadors Leonor Trinidad from Spain, Bhawna Chowdhary from India, and Oke Iroegbu from Nigeria.

Sincerely,

Shaun Carver, I-House Executive Director

New York Reunion In Review
By Samantha DePetro-Wysuph, I-House Philanthropy Advisor

On April 19th, we held an I-House Berkeley regional alumni reunion at International House New York. The event brought together 25 alumni from across multiple generations.

Lynn Caporale

One of the highlights was a passionate speech given by Lynn Caporale (IH 1967-72), pictured at right, who shared how her time at I-House impacted her life and shaped her worldview. She spoke about the transformative power of I-House, and how it had given her a unique perspective on the world and opened doors she never thought possible.

The event was a great opportunity for our alumni to connect again with one another and with I-House. Attendees shared stories about their time at I-House and caught up on each other’s lives, both personal and professional.

This was also a special opportunity for our alumni to meet Shaun Carver, who gave an update about recent happenings at I-House and shared his vision for the future, including expanding the institution's reach and impact.

Shaun Carver at the I-House reunion in NYI think it’s safe to say that all left the gathering feeling inspired about the future of I-House and looking forward to the next reunion!

The Beauty of Culture and Diversity
Indian Dancers at International Culture FestivalBy Bhawna Chowdhary

“Don’t listen to what they say, go see.” The Chinese proverb is true when it comes to experiencing different cultures from multiple countries at the same place and time.
On the 8th of April, 2023, we celebrated the International Culture Festival (ICF) at International House. The Robertson Center for Intercultural Leadership and Programs constantly works to provide residents with different cultural experiences.

Each year during Spring Break, I-House residents have the opportunity to be placed with an American host family. The Spring Break is a week-long break at the University of California, Berkeley that gives students and faculty time to rest from school work. This year, I-House organized two trips to the cities of Livermore and Redding, which were supported by the Rotary Clubs around the Bay Area.
