The I-House Connection: April 2023

The I-House Connection: April 2023
April 6, 2023

Dear Alumni and Friends,

In this issue of the I-House Connection, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Luis Escamilla to the newly created position of Vice President, Administrative Services. Reporting to the Executive Director and CEO of International House, this new role is responsible for managing, planning, and performing the administrative services and general business operations of International House at UC Berkeley.

On a bittersweet note, please join me in extending warm wishes to Cedric Martin, the Vice President of Hospitality at International House at UC Berkeley, who will be leaving our organization soon. After many years of dedicated service to our community, Cedric has decided to move on to new opportunities in Southern California.  I would like to take this opportunity to express deep appreciation for Cedric’s leadership, vision, and support. His tireless efforts have helped shape the direction of our organization, especially after the unfortunate shutdown resulting from COVID, and he has played a critical role in our success. We are grateful for his many contributions, and we will miss his presence and his contributions to our team.

I’d like to encourage you to register now to participate in some exciting events open to alumni, friends, and the community.

The first is the International Culture Festival on April 8, 2023, from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. in the Chevron Auditorium at I-House.  This signature tradition, organized by the Robertson Center for Intercultural Leadership and Programs, celebrates the diverse cultural traditions of our unique global community. The International Culture Festival is free of charge and is made possible by the Edith S. Coliver Fund.

It is also not too late to register for the April 19, 2023 I-House Reunion in Manhattan, NYC! I’ll be sharing some exciting I-House updates, and I look forward to connecting with friends old and new.  I’d like to express my appreciation to I-House New York, and to I-House alumna, Lynn Caporale (IH 1967-72), for their support in organizing the event.

In response to requests from many I-House alumni, I’m excited to share a “save-the-date” for an All Years Brunch Reunion to be held at I-House on August 6, 2023. This will be a fun and rewarding opportunity to visit the house to tour and see the many recent restoration projects, share memories with I-House friends, and enjoy a meal prepared by Executive Chef Abbie together in the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Dining Commons.

Thanks to all who have already participated in our online survey! If you’ve not yet had a chance, there is still time! Look for your email invitation sent on Monday, April 3rd, and take the survey by April 30th. Your feedback will be used to help us understand how your time at I-House has influenced your life, and inform our planning to ensure that current and future students can share in the life-changing International House experience.

Finally, I hope that you enjoy a retrospective on the recent Resident Benefit Concert in support of earthquake relief in Turkey and Syria.

Sincerely,

Shaun Carver, I-House Executive Director

A Night Full of Music: The Resident Benefit Concert
By Bhawna Chowdhary

At 7:00 p.m. on a Wednesday, people hustled into the Chevron Auditorium to get a good seat for the Resident Benefit Concert. When I entered and saw some people at the back of the room with paintings, a resident told me the paintings were for auction to help the earthquake victims of Turkey and Syria. Once again, I-House kept to its purpose of bringing different communities together and helping them through challenging times.
