The I-House Connection: September 2021

September 30, 2021

Dear I-House Alumni and Friends,

In this issue of the I-House Connection, I’d like to encourage you to watch a new documentary about trailblazing alumna Pauli Murray (IH 1944-45). Please also help us welcome Azza Chairannisa, one of our new Social Media Ambassadors, whose introductory message is included below.  I invite you to share your stories of “Who opened doors for you?” as a way of honoring the recent reopening of I-House to new and returning residents. We are recruiting for a number of positions, please help us spread the word!  Finally, if you haven’t yet joined our Global Community platform, please take a moment and do so at ihberkeleyconnect.org.  Thank you for all of your support, and Go Bears!

Sincerely,

Shaun Carver, I-House Executive Director

What to Watch: My Name is Pauli Murray

We are pleased to share the news that I-House Notable Alumna Pauli Murray (IH 1944-45) is featured in a new documentary about her remarkable, visionary and pioneering life and work. The film is being shown in select theaters, on PBS, and on Prime Video on October 1st. Executive Director Emeritus Joe Lurie (IH 1988-2007) writes, "I remember her I-House application, where in answer to the question of 'Race' she wrote 'Human' . . . At the time she was pursuing an LLM at Boalt."

Meet our Latest Social Media Ambassador (SMA)

Azza ChairanissaHello! My name is Mumtaza Chairannisa, but I go by Azza, and I have the great honour of being one of I-House’s new Social Media Ambassadors, and the greater pleasure of working with I-House’s Communications team! My role as an SMA includes using various social media platforms to connect and share the wonderful cultures we have within I-House. Another way I intend to promote the diverse cultures of our residents is through an International Cookbook where I will ask our lovely residents to send in recipes of the dishes that remind them of home!

A little bit about me: I am Indonesian, but I grew up in the UK. Currently, I am a Junior majoring in History. I spent my previous two years in France as part of the Sciences Po Paris and UC Berkeley Dual Degree program, where I majored in Economy and Society. I can speak Bahasa Indonesian, English, and to a much lesser extent, French.
